Most of the key sights are in the old town, where winding alleys lead to 16th- and 17th-century houses, guildhalls and many of the city’s 1,030 fountains. The best way to see it all is to stroll at will, although you can take a guided walking tour (starting at the main station tourist office, mid Apr-mid Oct 3pm Mon-Fri; mid Oct-mid Apr 11am Wed, Sat; 215 4000).
The renowned Kunsthaus Zürich (Heimplatz 1, 253 8484 closed Mon) is by far the best art gallery in Switzerland. An entire room is devoted to Marc Chagall, and it holds the biggest Edvard Munch collection outside Scandinavia. For more on Zürich’s many fine museums and galleries..
