The country is filled with forests, rivers, and lakes. In Lithuania, the people are mostly ethnic Lithuanians and members of the Roman Catholic Church. They are proud of their independence, their language, and their distinct cultural traditions. Once a mostly rural populace reliant on agriculture, today Lithuania has a modern European economy.
In March 1990 Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to formally declare its independence from the Soviet Union. Lithuanians filled streets and squares to demand the independence of their country. In September 1991 the central government of the Soviet Union finally acknowledged the republic’s declaration.
