After World War II ended in 1945, the Korea Peninsula was divided at the 38th parallel. The southern half became the democratic Republic of Korea (or South Korea), and the northern half became the communist People’s Republic of Korea (or North Korea). On June 25, 1950, North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel and invaded the South in a bold attempt to reunify the peninsula by force. To help prevent a communist takeover of the South, the United States joined the fighting under the banner of the United Nations (UN).
